It doesn’t push out the newcomers though, and keeps the pilot assists that can help people get to grips with the speed of the game, and it steadily ramps up the challenge with a decent curve. It feels sublime and exceptionally responsive, though I’m willing to bet that part of that is down to the DualShock4’s improvements over its older brother and handheld cousin. A simple check was to take part in a zone event and see where I got to before disintegrating… ding… trophy pinged that I’d never achieved on the other games. I say nearly because the smoother frame rate and optimised visuals made me feel like I was doing better than I ever had before. With no change to the handling model or controls, any veteran of the series will jump straight into the WipEout Omega Collection and be nearly at their best. Personally, I’d have preferred the soundtracks from the original games, I think they’re stronger, but it’s not a problem if you’ve got them on an USB stick… Not stopping with the game sounds, the music’s been completely replaced too, so it’s as up to date as they want it. I’d never noticed before that the teams all have different AI weapon announcers for when you’ve picked something up, and I’ve played a lot of WipEout. It’s crisper, cleaner and pulls you right into the cockpit of the anti-grav racers. Audio’s not been ignored either, and if you’ve a 7.1 setup or good pair of surround headphones you’re going to love how immersive it is. There’s so much more detail to take in if you’re ever going slow enough to appreciate the attention that’s been paid. None of the original releases of these titles were bad looking, but 2048 really benefits from the bump from tiny OLED screen to full on living room size. Clever Beans working with Sony’s Xdev studio and EPOS have really pushed the boat out to ensure not only the resolution stacks up, but the ships and environments scale too. The WipEout Omega Collection is a reworking of HD and Fury from the PS from the PS Vita, and there’s been a huge amount of work gone into not only getting up to 4K and 60 FPS, but in rebuilding the environments, ships and effects to make the most of the PS4 and Pro’s power. Now you’re back, returned from the great gaming beyond, and it’s with joyous hearts and sharpened minds we take you back into the PlayStation fold… even if you are technically just a remaster. We’ve embraced the highs and weathered the lows, and even mourned you when Studio Liverpool was shuttered. Wowing us with your futuristic setting, thumping beats and frenetic action. Oh WipEout, you’ve been a staple of our gaming diet for the last 20 years.
